Power and Steam Generation Industry

Since it’s inception, Scientific Instruments has focused on providing reliable, low maintenance measuring systems used extensively in the power and steam generation industry. CFA-1030 Silica, CFA-1011 Sodium, CFA-1047 Phosphate and CFA-1018 Hydrazine monitors are used world-wide to control and safeguard critical plant processes, providing assurance to operators and management that the processes are operating efficiently.

Silica is often measured in the make-up water system at the final mixed bed prior to storage, as well as in the boiler water and the saturated steam. Sodium is monitored in the return condensate, after the polisher and in the saturated steam. Phosphate is monitored in the boiler when phosphate treatment is used and hydrazine is monitored in the deaerator. When other oxygen scavengers are used as an alternative the CFA-1018 monitor may still be utilized, using as a "standard" in the monitor, the chemical species actually used as the scavenger.

Continuous monitoring of critical parameters allows a plant to reduce downtime and maintenance, dramatically reduce plant start-up times. On-line monitoring of silica in the boiler during boiler start-up has been proven to dramatically reduce plant start-up time, enabling the plant to come to full power in a much shorter time. Sodium monitoring can also help a plant to avoid catastrophic turbine failures.

Scientific Instruments recognizes industry needs for on-line process monitors which:

  • Utilize maximum automation for operation, and minimum amount of operator interface and maintenance required
  • Fully automates routine calibration - requires no operator intervention.
  • Extends routine maintenance frequency to once-a-month

The CFA-1030 Silica Monitor can monitor from (1) up to (6) streams sequentially, on a locally-programmed basis. The CFA-1030 uses a proprietary, patented calibration technique which incorporates a zero and full-scale blank measurement and subtraction from subsequent measurements, as well as regular autocalibration and drift correction. This combination assures that correct, up-to-date measurements are available for optimum process control, as well as providing the operator with sufficient correct data to optimally control the process.

The CFA-1011 Sodium Monitor utilizes unique, "solid state" electrodes which require:

  • Absolutely NO filling solution
  • Absolutely NO routine maintenance such as addition of filling solution, etching or other tasks are EVER required.
  • Achieve detection limits of 0.01 ppb or better.
  • Always fully automated calibration & autocorrection (if necessary).

The CFA-1011 Sodium Monitor also measures from (1) up to (6) streams sequentially. It uses a buffer solution that is non-hazardous and is not objectionable to the operators who have to work with it. It uses a 2-standard calibration and provides 2 decades of concentration for it’s 4-20 mA output.

Not only is the electrode maintenance-free, but it lasts a long time. As long as it is protected from particulate so that it doesn’t get plugged, customers report that electrodes are often in use for 5 years or more!

Both the CFA-1030 Silica Monitor (and other colorimetric monitors such as hydrazine and phosphate) and the CFA-1011 Sodium Monitor, use identical platforms - in fact virtually all spare parts for both types of monitors are common. All parts are common except for (1) pc board and a colorimeter is required for the colorimetric-based systems. Operational protocols are also virtually identical, making operator and maintenance training a simple matter.

Semiconductor/Microelectronics Industry

Scientific Instruments provides reliable silica and sodium monitors for the semiconductor industry. Ultrapure water with a minimum of contaminants is critical to the industry as architecture grows increasingly smaller. Silica and sodium are bellwether parameters which indicate an increase in anion or cation contamination as their concentration increases.

It is critical that water used for washing and rinsing be as pure and free from anions and cations as is technologically possible. Silica is the 1st easily detected anion to break through as resin beds begin to become exhausted. Sodium is the 1st to break through on the cation columns. This provides an "early warning system" of alarms which causes the beds to be re-conditioned.

The CFA-1011 requires much less routine attention than the alternatives, improving reliability of the data and since less time is involved in the analysis, the data is readily available for actually fine-tuning the ultrapure water system, maximizing production through-put & cost effectiveness.

The bottom line is an increase in productivity.

Silica is monitored by the CFA-1030 continuous monitor which utilizes a patented calibration procedure allowing silica levels to be measured at both "zero" and full scale and the values automatically subtracted from both the "zero" or baseline value and the full-scale value. This greatly eliminates the typical bias which affects most on line monitors, especially those which measure at extremely low detection levels. Values below 1 ppb are routinely & accurately measured.

Sodium is monitored by the CFA-1011 continuous monitor and can be measured routinely below normal detection limits. The CFA-1011 uses unique, "solid state" electrodes which require:

  • Absolutely NO filling solution
  • Absolutely NO routine maintenance such as addition of filling solution, etching or other tasks are EVER required.
  • Achieve detection limits of 0.01 ppb or better.
  • Always fully automated calibration & autocorrection (if necessary).

Food, Beverage, Chemical & Pharmaceutical Manufacturing:

Scientific Instrument’s CFA-1000 series on-line monitors are used for a variety of applications in the food, beverage and pharmaceutical industries. These applications range from captive power generation (co-gen) applications, generic to the power industry, to various process water measurements.

Iron is monitored in some instances, fluoride or ammonia in others in various process streams. These components are measured in ppb or low ppm levels.

All of these systems incorporate the same features that customers have come to depend upon - full auto-cal, single or multistream models & "one-button" operation. These allow minimal operator attention & 15 minutes or so maintenance per month.

Customers can depend upon their CFA-1000 monitors for reliable around-the-clock monitoring and data.

Water System Fabrication Vendors:

CFA-1000 series monitors are routinely installed by water system fabricators as an integral part of their panel(or system) to monitor silica, sodium, phosphate, hydrazine, iron, copper, ammonia or other parameter. The systems are either panel-mounted or are installed independently as part of the overall system. Features such as a detachable reagent (bottom) cabinet (reduces panel space), uniformity of operating protocol and wide industry acceptance have made these systems very attractive to the Fabricators. Both single stream monitors & multistream models are widely used. Standard & optional signals add to the flexibility of the systems for OEM use.

Environmental Monitoring Applications

CFA-1000 series monitors are used for a variety of environmental applications from routine point-source applications for selected parameters such as copper or hexavalent chromium, to process-control applications designed to maximum efficiency of copper removal/chrome destruction systems or reclamation of process water , removing silica, ammonia or other anion or cation.

Recent legislation has added requirements for many Municipalities and Waste Treaters to monitor for various heavy metals in potable water supplies. Contaminated water is removed from the ground, treated, removing the anion or cation of interest & returned to the ground, less the ion(s) of interest. Continuous monitoring of these ions provides the Treaters with hard “before & after” data, along with proof of analysis & process control parameters.

Active programs include water reclamation projects to remove various heavy metals from potable water sources

Wherever anions or cations cam be measured & doing so improves or allows process control, CFA-1000 series monitors are being used.
